Revealed! Pique reason for Messi leaving Barca

Gerard Pique has been rumbled as the key actor in Lionel Messi's departure from Barcelona for PSG in August.

El Pais reports after terms had been agreed on his contract renewal, Messi took a call from Barca president Joan Laporta on August 4 to be informed his agreement could not go ahead.

Later, Messi learned Piqué would not advocate his renewal at all costs. The centre-back had told Laporta: "Without Leo, the issue of financial fair play will be resolved".

And so it was. The departure of the Argentine allowed Barcelona to start the season with a relatively controlled situation and the financial efforts of some players, including Piqué himself, led to the registration of signings such as Memphis Depay.

Meanwhile, PSG dressing room sources have insisted on Messi: "He is more social, he asks you things, he also tells you things about his life and about him."
